About

Secret Spot was created because Keith and his brother Eric wanted to share their experience of growing up in the great outdoors. As locals, they grew up on a farm next to the Kaituna river, and have always loved getting out on adventures – white water rafting, kayaking, hunting, biking, rap jumping, exploring the bush, swimming in rivers and lakes – generally just enjoying themselves.

At the end of each adventure, the brothers always managed to find a hot stream in the bush or hot water beach, a secret spot that only a few locals knew about, where they would retell the day’s stories and share a drink and a laugh, having a great time.

On a recent adventure deep in the heart of Te Urewera National Park, while canoeing the Whakatane River in wild, driving rain and gale-force winds, they dreamt of soaking in a nice steaming hot tub. So, they hatched a plan to re-create the secret spot of their youth, a place they could share with fellow adventurers and visitors to their patch of paradise.

And here they are now, Kiwi owned, connecting with nature and friends to have a great time.

An enjoyable soak experience – They are totally committed to giving you a safe, clean, and enjoyable soak experience. They have designed a state-of-the-art filtering and treatment system to retain the natural purity of the fresh water that they draw from the forest spring.
Artboard 4 copy 16 Fresh, pure water – Crystal clear fresh spring water filtered through volcanic aquifers for a hundred years. Non-geothermal (no sulphur smells!), wonderful mineral balance with neutral pH.
Artboard 4 copy 17 Perfect temperature – Biofuel is used to warm the spring water to a comfy 38-40oC ( a bit cooler on hot days).
Artboard 4 copy 18 A freshly drawn tub of filtered water awaits each visitor – Water in each individual tub is continuously replenished with fresh filtered water during your soak, with the entire tub completely changed during the course of your soak. The water is “your” water – water does not flow from tub to tub.

Non-chemical water treatment – Environmentally friendly (and bather-friendly) technology is used to filter and treat the water to NZ Pool Water Quality Standards, without relying on nasty chemicals. Using sand filters, electronic oxidising, ionising, and ultrasonic processes (Enviroswim technology) delivers safe, pure water with no skin or eye irritation typical of chlorine-based systems.
Artboard 4 copy 20 A clean fresh tub every visit – The best-in-class cleaning systems assure you of the highest levels of hygiene. Tubs are freshly filled for your soak and water continuously replenished during your visit. Tubs are inspected by staff before each visit and individually cleaned daily or as required. In addition, they electronically monitor the quality of the water continuously to ensure delivery of safe, pure water to each tub. The water is filtered through a sand filter and the Enviroswim ultrasonic unit. They also undertake daily manual water testing to back up the electronic system, and regularly complete a comprehensive microbiological test. The shared changing facilities are also cleaned on the hour or approximately 13 times each day. Also they encourage those of you fresh off a mountain bike ride to have a shower before hopping into the hot tub.

Keith has spent his career showing Kiwis and visitors a great time, commercially guiding rafts down the wild rivers of New Zealand and Nepal, rolling folks down hills in large balls, guiding the Southern great walks, horse and motorbike treks, canoe safaris, and spa and geothermal adventures.

What to expect from Secret Spot

Get your own tub with no interruptions or rowdy swimmers with you. Their 12 tubs are secluded and set outside amongst the tree ferns, with optional umbrellas over the tub to shade you from the sun or rain. At night you soak in a magical setting of lanterns amongst the beautifully lit surrounding native bush.

What goes well with a hot tub soak after a big day’s adventure? A nice cold craft beer, cider, wine or refreshing beverage of your choice.

While you are showering and changing in our new cedar facilities, we will take your flax Kete (basket) with complimentary drinking water and your pre ordered favourite craft drink from the cash bar and set up your individual hot tub for your arrival. You head down the boardwalk through the ferns to find your secluded hot tub next to the Waipa stream. Relax, share the stories from your day’s adventures, and connect with nature. There is even push button drinks service from the hot tub.

They have complimentary lockers to secure your gear, and mountain bikers are welcome to bring in the bikes through the secret entrance – they know how you can’t bear to be parted from them.

After your soak, lounge a little longer on the veranda and boardwalk area where you can enjoy a bite to eat, an ice cream, or a post-soak beverage while you check out your day’s photo snaps.

They are open between 9am and 10pm in the Waipa Valley, at the Whakarewarewa Forest Mountain Biking car park which is a short 2-minute drive south of Rotorua in the Waipa Valley.

Book an hour of secluded hot tub time (45 minutes of soak time and 15 minutes for getting in and out).

For those of you who don’t feel like a full-on hot tub soak, grab a fresh-brewed Manuka roasted coffee or beverage and have a complimentary “shinny dip” – sit back and soak those tired legs in an awesome mini cedar hot tubs on the boardwalk.
